Commissioner supports Northumbria’s rural communities

Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird has thrown her support behind Northumbria Police’s crackdown on rural crime.
She said: “Rural crime is very much a priority for myself and Northumbria Police and I fully understand the impact it has on the county and its communities.
“In June I went with the Chief Constable to a public meeting in Berwick where we were able to listen first hand to the concerns people have.
“Tackling rural crime is vital and I know the force takes the issue very seriously working with partners, including other forces, and local communities to tackle it and bring reassurance to the people who live and work in our fabulous county.
“Northumberland is a large area with some very widespread communities and I know if tools, machinery or vehicles are stolen this can have a big impact – not only because of the obvious loss of property but because these items are often relied on by people for their livelihoods.”
Mrs Baird continued: “I am committed to ensuring that Northumbria Police continues to work with communities to ensure concerns are fully addressed and action taken against those who try to disrupt people’s way of life.
“Through the Farm Watch scheme we can help people keep their property safe and provide them with advice if they see anything suspicious.
“The force works hard to keep Northumberland communities updated, not only through flyers and posters but personally by officers visiting local communities.”
Earlier this year two rural crime events were held at Alnwick Castle and Hexham Auction Mart with more than 100 people going along to learn about crime prevention as well as hearing from the senior officers responsible for policing the county.
