Time Capsule to be Buried at New Police Station

Children from Newcastle and Gateshead primary schools are filling a time capsule under a landmark new police station which is opening soon.
Final preparations are now underway for the public opening of the Newcastle City Centre Police Station at Forth Banks – on Friday, September 19.
Pupils aged 9 and 10 from St Paul’s Church of England Primary School in Victoria Street, Newcastle, and St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School on Prince Consort Road in Gateshead came along with the special box, which will be buried before the official opening. The capsule contains items made by the children giving an insight into their school life and the children’s interests.
The youngsters placed inside the time capsule a book outlining the history of their school, photos of pupils and clay figures they have made. They included letters with their future predictions for what life will be like in many years to come. When the time capsule is eventually dug up it aims to give future generations an insight into the school work carried out by youngsters back in 2014.
Work began on the new police station in 2011, with the complete renovation of former railway buildings which have been bridged with a new structure on the site in Forth Banks, covering five floors.
“I am delighted these youngsters have been part of this historic event with us today,” said Vera Baird, Northumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner.
“It’s important some of the youngest members of our communities have been involved with this project, which is all about the future, and it’s great they have had the chance to be some of the first to see what is Northumbria’s latest police station and meet some of our officers.”
Chief Superintendent Laura Young, Newcastle Area Commander, added: “It’s good to get school children involved in this project, which has gradually taken shape over the last few years. We’re pleased they were keen to take part and share their work and views about school and their leisure interests.
“Policing is very much a part of the local community in the same way as schools are and we wanted to encourage youngsters to take an interest, come and meet officers and have a sneak preview of the building, which is opening to the public later this month.”
The time capsule will be buried under the building and a plaque inside the building will mark the event for visitors.
