Northumbria takes part in Counter Terrorism Awareness Week

Northumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Vera Baird has been using National Counter Terrorism Awareness Week to continue spreading the word about people being vigilant in and around their local community.
The Commissioner and her team work closely with residents and community groups to ensure everyone does their bit in keeping Tyne & Wear and Northumberland a safe place to live, work and visit.
Vera Baird QC said: “Thousands of people make daily trips around our region and Northumbria Police works hard to keep our communities safe. The police receive lots of information from the community on a range of topics, and all we are asking is that people continue to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police. By working together we will keep our towns and cities safe.”
Mrs Baird added: “Local people’s eyes and ears are a great surveillance tool. It would be great if they could tell the police or other figures in the community, like bus drivers and train drivers, about anything they see as suspicious.
“The police stand every chance of detecting and stopping any incidences that could occur. Protecting our region remains a top priority for myself and Northumbria Police, and we will continue to work with all agencies to deliver these key messages.”
National Counter Terrorism Awareness Week has seen Northumbria Police deliver a targeted campaign of police activity taking place at ‘key sites’ across the force area. The aim is to disrupt terrorist activity and any criminal actions which may be helping to fund or support terrorism.
Officers have also been working to improve security and vigilance at potential high risk areas such as sporting venues and transport hubs.
During National Counter Terrorism Awareness Week, police and partner agencies have been working together to increase vigilance amongst the general public, business and transport community.
National Counter Terrorism Awareness Week runs until Sunday.
