Special Constables in Sunderland and South Tyneside received recognition on Monday night for their commitment to Northumbria Police.
Northumbria Police’s Special Constables work alongside regular police officers, carrying out the same role and doing the same job to help protect communities and keep people safe. Northumbria’s specials come from a range of backgrounds and from varying professions – the force currently has a farmer and scientist to name but a few, and has just said goodbye to a professional rugby player.
Earlier this month the force recognised the role of Specials at its first ever Volunteers’ Conference to thank all those involved in volunteering for Northumbria Police and the Police and Crime Commissioner.
And, at a special event held last night those specials who work across Sunderland and South Tyneside were recognised for their commitment. Those who attended had all worked more than 200 hours as a special in the past year.
Area Commander for Southern Area Command, Chief Superintendent Ged Noble, hosted the event to thank the volunteers for their dedication.
Ch Supt Noble said: “I was very proud and honoured to be able to meet some of our specials together with their families and friends last night and thank them personally for their commitment to Northumbria Police and the work they do across Sunderland and South Tyneside.
“We value all of our volunteers, whether they offer a few hours a week or are able to offer more time, their support is extremely important to us and something we’re very keen to recognise and thank them for.
“The special constabulary makes a huge contribution within the force, our specials work alongside regular police officers, carrying out the same role and doing the same job to protect our communities. Those who volunteer bring a wealth of experience from their everyday roles that is invaluable to supporting our policing teams and we continually encourage more people to get involved.”
Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Vera Baird, said: “ Our Specials deserve every bit of recognition for their time and dedication. I know how valued they are by both police officers and local residents and want to thank all of them for the contribution they make to keeping our communities safe.”
