Advocacy Centre North to deliver new Hate Crime Advocacy service

Advocacy Centre North, part of Newcastle CVS, has been awarded funding from Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird DBE QC, to deliver an innovative advocacy service to people who are victims of hate crime across Tyne and Wear and Northumbria. Advocacy Centre North will also coordinate a programme of training events aimed at bringing communities together to tackle hate crime.
Jacqui Jobson, Director of Advocacy Centre North, said:
“I am delighted that we are now able to provide much-needed advocacy and emotional support to people who are victims of hate crime. We will provide them with a voice and support them to report their experiences, navigate the criminal justice system, access services and have their rights upheld.
“We are also looking forward to working with our partners to provide a series of events which will challenge hatred and prejudice, promote equality, diversity and respect and encourage unity.”
Vera Baird, Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, awarded the funding following a successful bid to her Supporting Victims Fund, which helps strengthen victim services across Northumbria. She said:
“Across Northumbria, we are striving to ensure victims of crime have access to the right support for them.
“Newcastle CVS is committed to improving the quality of people’s lives across the region. Through this new service, Advocacy Centre North will be able to offer tailored, emotional and practical support helping those who have been targeted, through no fault of their own, to cope and move on from their experience.
“Absolutely no one should be victimised – it’s as simple as that. It’s vital that this kind of support is there to support and protect victims and to help prevent re-victimisation. I wish the project every success.”
