Vera Baird supports Armed Forces Day

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Dame Vera Baird is honouring our service men and women by raising awareness of the importance of veteran welfare this Armed Forces Day.
Taking place on Saturday 24th June, Armed Forces Day is an annual event which shows support for men and women in the Armed Forces community.
It’s a chance to celebrate the work of our service personnel, veterans, cadets and their families.
Dame Vera Baird is an avid supporter of the work of local charities including Forward Assist which provides advice and support to veterans adapting to civilian life, and Project Nova which supports veterans who have been arrested or who are at risk of arrest.
She said: “This day is about highlighting the excellent work of our services personnel, who through hard work dedicate their lives to keeping us safe. With this commitment and dedication in mind, I think it’s important that we do all we can to ensure welfare provisions for our armed forces are the best they can be. I give my full backing to calls for the Government to step up when it comes to pay, accommodation and veteran welfare.
“For me, in my role as police and crime commissioner, I want to make sure that the right understanding and support is there for all veterans, including those who, after fighting for their country, understandably at times face their own personal battles
with the transition to the civilian way of life. For those who may end up coming into contact with the police, it’s important that they are appropriately supported at what can be a difficult time. Bespoke tailored support really is crucial and that’s why I give my full support to schemes such as Project Nova and Forward Assist.”
