Vera and team join the fight against cancer

5th July 2017

Dame Vera Baird QC and colleagues from Northumbria’s Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) have their running shoes at the ready, ahead of taking part in this week-end’s Race for Life.

Setting off from Exhibition Park in Newcastle, the popular fundraiser is taking place in aid of Cancer Research UK and proceeds raised will help fund thousands of researchers, doctors and nurses who work to beat the disease – a disease which affects one in two people.

After months of training, the team at the OPCC is looking for as much support as possible and is welcoming donations, which can be made here: https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/veras-race-for-life-1

Vera Baird, who will be joined by colleagues Rachel Lawson, Gillian Grabham and Kate Graham, said: “Sadly, most of us know someone who has been touched by cancer and we all have our special reasons for taking part and wanting to help more people survive.

“Vital research is being made possible thanks to events like this, which see women coming together, challenging themselves for a fantastic cause and there’s still time for more people to sign up and join us.

“I wish everyone taking part on Sunday the best of luck and I hope the people of Newcastle dig deep to make sure this year’s run is one of the most successful yet.”
