Pioneering VAWG Work Featured by National Charity

Revolving Doors Agency, a national criminal justice charity, has published a new report ‘Spotlight on Violence Against Women and Girls’ (VAWG). The report shines a light on the innovative work that Police and Crime Commissioners across the country are driving forward to tackle violence against women and girls.
Amongst the seven case studies highlighted in the report is ‘The Northumbria Building Capability Project’, an initiative delivered by the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria, Dame Vera Baird QC, in partnership with Northumbria Community Rehabilitation Company (CRC) and Changing Lives (a national charity supporting vulnerable people).
The Northumbria Building Capability Project aims to divert vulnerable women away from entering the criminal justice system- especially victims of violence who are at risk of doing so. It will do this by providing specialist support to this group of women at Women’s Hubs, which are situated across the force area.
The Northumbria Building Capability Project occupies an important space in approaches to tackling violence against women and girls, by ensuring that victims of domestic violence do not become caught up in the criminal justice system. Instead these vulnerable women are provided with the support that they need to re-build their lives in the right place (Women’s Hubs) at the right time.
Dame Vera Baird QC, Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria, said:
“The aim of our collective work around VAWG is simple – to make more help available so that whenever or wherever a victim feels able to seek help, there is someone with the correct training who can offer a route to safety. With the advent of the transformation fund, I’m delighted to see the emergence of innovative projects to deliver just that. Locally, the PTF Board and Home Office funding has enabled the growth of initiatives such as the Women’s Diversionary Support pathway and A Whole System Approach, which sees six North East forces collaborating to transform our response to domestic abuse. Such innovations clearly demonstrate our commitment to taking action against such abhorrent violence.”
