Common sense has prevailed thanks to partnership working, which included support from Northumbria’s Police & Crime Commissioner Vera Baird QC.
The government had originally stated that they were to stop support for families bereaved by homicide prior to 2010. This proposal horrified Vera Baird and she immediately raised her concerns with the Ministry of Justice Minister, Damian Green MP.
Following the intervention of Mrs Baird and others, Mr Green asked his officials to review the proposals as a matter of urgency. The Ministry of Justice have today announced that they intend to extend the current funding arrangements until March 2015, at the same level as currently provided.
Mrs Baird said “I’m glad common sense has prevailed. This is a welcomed announcement to the families who use these services. It is imperative that families affected by homicide have the confidence and security in the help and support being offered. This announcement will ensure that professional, dedicated help continues to be available”
The announcement was welcomed by Frank Mullane of Advocacy After Fatal Domestic Abuse charity, who also expressed his gratitude for Mrs Baird’s influential intervention.
Mrs Baird added “I will continue to support charities and volunteers who provide excellent services for homicide victims”
