Commissioner Committed to Driving Down Car Crime

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird has pledged her commitment to driving down car crime.
Commissioner Baird has vowed that Northumbria Police officers will continue to mount activity across the force to target thieves intent on stealing vehicles or their contents.
Various initiatives are underway as part of Operation Soundwave – the forcewide campaign looking to crack down on all types of acquisitive crime.
Just last week, four people were arrested after a car was stolen from the Houghton area. All have been bailed pending further enquiries.
Patrols were also stepped up in Jarrow and Hebburn earlier this month following a spate of theft from cars while crime prevention advice was given out by officers.
Commissioner Baird said: “Northumbria Police will continue to target those whose actions cause problems for others.
“Stealing a bit of loose change from a car may seem insignificant to a thief but it can have a massive impact on a victim whose car may be taken off the road while damage from the break in is repaired.
“In some cases, theft from or of a car can affect a person’s livelihood if they rely on this vehicle on a daily basis for work.
“Let me make it absolutely clear, our officers have thieves in their sights and will stop them in their tracks and put them before the courts.
“It’s also important we all do our bit to ensure thieves don’t have the opportunity to carry out crime. I would urge people to take on board crime prevention advice from our officers which will help them avoid becoming a victim and make life harder for criminals.”
