Commissioner congratulates charity for royal seal of approval

3rd June 2015

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird has congratulated the north east branch of a charity after it received the royal seal of approval.

Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for their commitment to providing independent support to women who have experienced sexual violence at any point in their lifetime.

Members of the team were given the accolade at a recent Buckingham Palace Royal Garden Party.

Commissioner Baird has long been a supporter of the organisation. In March this year, she joined with Rape Crisis to promote and support their new premises and the campaign ‘Rape #we believe you’, providing funding for it through her Community Safety Fund.

She said: “I’m delighted the hard work and dedication of everyone at Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland has been recognised at the highest level.

“What better honour can an organisation be given than to be recognised by the Queen. The charity fully deserves this award and it’s testament to the commitment its staff put in to helping and supporting women who have experienced rape or sexual assault.

“The service they give to these women is life changing and in some cases life saving – the team thoroughly deserve this accolade.”

Rape Crisis provides an independent and confidential service to women who have experienced rape or sexual assault, giving them access to free confidential support, information and counselling.

Commissioner Baird added: “Rape Crisis works with vulnerable victims of sexual violence who often feel noone understands them and they are alone with no help or way through their horrendous experience.

“This invaluable service provides victims with a pathway to safety with access to people and organisations who fully understand what they are going through and are able to get them the help and support they need.”
