Commissioner Supports National Volunteers’ Week

1st June 2015

Northumbria Police and its Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird are offering support to National Volunteers’ Week and taking the opportunity to celebrate the great work their volunteers do.

Hundreds of people give up their time to offer support to Northumbria Police whether through the Special Constabulary, Police Cadets, Community Speedwatch, advisory group members and community volunteers, such as Neighbourhood Watch.

Others put themselves forward for volunteering opportunities with the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner such as by sitting on the rape scrutiny or court observer panels, the independent audit committee or an advisory group. Opportunities also exist to get involved in dog welfare visiting and independent custody visiting.

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird said: “National Volunteering Week is a wonderful initiative allowing us to put our volunteers in the spotlight and highlight the fantastic job they do.

“Volunteers give up their own time to make a real difference to other people’s lives. They quite rightly should be commended for their dedication and commitment which is second to none.

“I’m delighted that so many people choose to volunteer for both the force and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner area and I extend my gratitude to them.

“I hope the week attracts even more people to make a personal contribution in this way in the future. I would encourage anyone interested in such an opportunity to visit my website to find out more.”

This year, National Volunteer Week runs from June 1 to June 7. Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding and gives people the opportunity to give something back and make a difference in the community.

Assistant Chief Constable Jo Farrell said: “National Volunteering Week is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the great work our volunteers do across the force.

“We’re incredibly grateful that members of our communities give up their own time to offer their support to policing, bringing their own skills and experience from a range of backgrounds to provide an invaluable resource. Volunteers help form a vital link between the force and the local community, helping us to identify and respond to the issues that concern our communities the most.

“Those who get involved in the many different volunteering opportunities within the force tell us they find it incredibly rewarding to be part of making a difference in their community. It gives people the opportunity to give something back as well as gain new skills and experience to help their own development, we would always encourage anyone interested in volunteering with us to get in contact.”

National Volunteering Week runs from 1 to 7 June and is an annual celebration of those who volunteer. #volunteerweek
