Commissioner’s Response – Two HMIC Inspections

15th July 2014

The Strategic Policing Requirement an inspection of how forces in England and Wales deal with:

  1. Threats to public order
  2. Threats of a large scale cyber incident (including criminal attack)

I am responding to two HMIC reports together.  Both reports were published in June 2014.

Northumbria as with the Strategic policing Requirement inspection were one of the 18 forces inspected to inform this national report.  The conclusions drawn in both reports provide us with an overview of the key issues that forces are facing in relation to these two key elements of the Strategic Policing Requirement.  Having been inspected as part of this programme will give Northumbria the opportunity to have a first hand understanding of the conclusions that HMIC have included in the report. I will work with the Chief Constable through my performance management regime, to ensure that I am assured of Northumbria’s:

  • Ability to have the appropriate staffing levels to meet the requirement around public order and cyber-crime, both locally and nationally,
  • Understanding of the threat , risk and harm posed by Cyber Crime,
  • Training regime for officers and staff around the awareness of cyber crime; and
  • Joint working with other police forces in relation to public order policing.
