Celebrating 10th Northern Pride

21st July 2017

Northumbria Police will be ‘Policing with Pride’ again as the city celebrates a tenth anniversary of the Northern Pride Festival.

The event will be the tenth to be held in Newcastle and will take place primarily at the Town Moor from Friday until Sunday (July 21 – 23).

Staff from the OPCC will be attending Pride, supporting officers, staff and volunteers throughout the weekend to both offer support to those attending and to take part in activities.

On Friday evening a “Running With Pride” team of runners – including some of the force’s senior officers – will be taking part in the Northern Front Runners LGBT 5K run on the Town Moor.

On Saturday morning Northumbria Police will host a joint Pride Breakfast at Newcastle Civic Centre, along with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and the North East Ambulance Service. And for the parade itself officers, staff and cadets will be joining in with the Pride Parade as it makes its way through the city centre to the Town Moor.

On the Town Moor police will host a Pride Stall at the events being held afterwards where visitors will be able to speak to officers and find out more about how police support the LGBT+ communities.

PC Janine Turnbull and PC Chrissie Ender, who appear every month on the ‘Policing With Pride’ radio slot on Pride Radio North East’s ‘Drive Time’ show, will be on the police stall across the weekend.

In a public show of support the force will be flying both the rainbow and transgender flags at each area command police station and its headquarters, as well as on its social media accounts for the weekend.

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Dame Vera Baird QC, said: “I’m sure the 10th Northern Pride will be a huge success, there is lots planned and I know everyone visiting will have a great time.  Let’s hope the sun is shining!  Pride will also be an opportunity for those visiting to chat with police officers to find out what help and support Northumbria Police can offer. Let’s make the 2017 Northern Pride the best yet”.

Chief Superintendent Neil Hutchison said: “Northern Pride is a fantastic event for the city and the wider region. We are delighted that Newcastle is hosting the event for the tenth time.

“It is very important for us to join in this celebration of the LGBT+ community in order to build relationships of trust and confidence in the local police service.

“We are proud to support Pride and we will have officers involved in every aspect of the weekend – from taking part in Friday evening run to being part of the parade itself.

“Throughout the weekend we will have staff at a stall on the Town Moor to give the opportunity to speak to police about any issues whether that be reporting a hate crime or embarking on a career in the police.

“We’re always keen to build and improve on our relationships with the LGBT+ communities and we want to hear what it is that concerns people the most and what we can do to help.

“We are here to listen to people’s ideas and views. Please come and speak to us, we are here for you.”
