Funding for victims services for the coming year was today allocated by the Ministry of Justice.
The announcement follows concerns raised by the Association of Police and Crime Commissioner’s victims lead Vera Baird, PCC for Northumbria, who yesterday wrote to minister Mike Penning asking for an urgent allocation of this overdue funding.
Commissioner Vera Baird said “We are glad that the MoJ has now allocated funding for victims as a number of our local small organisations supporting victims were worried about continuity of their work into next year.
“Our disappointment is twofold – firstly that the sums allocated are for one year only, meaning that we will have to go through this entire process again next year.
“Secondly, that the funding has not increased despite the meteoric rise in complaints about sexual exploitation and the recent announcement of huge increases in cyber crime.
“That said, we are glad to have the funding and that it has not been cut, which is a key relief”.
