Local Housing provider Gentoo has been recognised as a “Star Performer” in the recently published Stonewall Top 100 Employers 2016 and praised by that organisation for taking on
Police & Crime Commissioner, Vera Baird ‘s domestic abuse champions strategy.
To be a “star performer”, Gentoo have had to repeatedly demonstrate their commitment to creating inclusive workplaces by ranking in the top ten of the Stonewall top 100 employees at least three times in the last five years – Locally, Gentoo have achieved this. This year’s recognition also included the collaboration Gentoo have undertaken with Northumbria’s Police & Crime Commissioner, Vera Baird QC.
Vera Baird established Domestic Abuse Champions, who are workplace colleagues, for men and women who may wish to share concerns about domestic abuse. The champion, who receives full training, can then offer advice on the support available both within the organisation and from partner agencies. They are not expected to solve the problem themselves but to calmly help to refer them on to skilled help. So far over 600 champions have been trained.
Since the introduction of Domestic Abuse Champions, Gentoo have encouraged other employers to sign up to the initiative.
Vera Baird said “Gentoo has demonstrated their commitment to creating inclusive workplaces over many years and I am delighted that their efforts have been recognised by Stonewall once again.
I have worked closely with Gentoo to develop a network of Domestic Abuse Champions and I know of their commitment to tackling domestic violence wherever it happens. Gentoo has worked hard to deliver an effective programme to tackle same sex domestic abuse across the communities they serve. I look forward to working with the team at Gentoo in the future – we’ve developed a great partnership which I want to extend further”
