Northumbria Police’s New Chief Constable – Steve Ashman

4th June 2015

Northumbria Police has appointed Steve Ashman as it’s new Chief Constable.

The Northumbria Police and Crime Panel has confirmed the appointment of Police & Crime Commissioner Vera Baird’s proposed candidate, Steven Ashman, to be the new Chief Constable of Northumbria Police.

The Panel conducted a confirmation hearing attended by Mr Ashman and Mrs Baird on Monday June 1.

Chief Constable Ashman will take up his appointment from June 4.

Commenting on the Panel’s endorsement Mrs Baird said: “I am delighted that the panel has approved my decision to appoint Mr Ashman as the next Chief Constable for Northumbria.

“Mr Ashman has exceptional experience of policing and has been a leading member of the senior leadership team here in Northumbria for a number of years.

“He has been behind many initiatives that have improved policing across the force area and being local to the area, he is proud of the region and wants to work with partners to make a difference.  I am pleased that these attributes have been recognised by the panel.

“I have every confidence in his capabilities to lead Northumbria Police in the future and I look forward to working with him to deliver the priorities within the Police & Crime Plan.

“Mr Ashman and I will be embarking on a series of ‘Meet Your Chief and Commissioner’ public events during the summer and we look forward to hearing from our communities.”

Chair of the Northumbria Police and Crime Panel Councillor Harry Trueman said: “Steve Ashman is an excellent choice and will make a fantastic Chief Constable for Northumbria Police.

“The panel process worked really well, there was an extremely high level in the candidates who went for the role but the panel’s decision was unanimous and we are really looking forward to working with him and the commissioner in making Northumbria an even greater force.

Northumbria Chief Constable Steve Ashman said: “I am honoured to be appointed as Chief Constable of Northumbria Police.

“These are challenging times for policing, but this is Northumbria, we have great people who achieve great things everyday and I am confident we will respond to the challenges that lie ahead positively and with a sense of pride in the service we provide.

“I look forward to working with the Police and Crime Commissioner and our partners to deliver the very best quality of policing that our communities deserve.”

Mr Ashman joined Northumbria in 2009 as Assistant Chief Constable and became Deputy in 2013.
