PCC and Northumbria Police urge men to take a stand against domestic abuse

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Vera Baird and Northumbria Police are urging men in the North East to take a stand against domestic abuse this White Ribbon Day.
White Ribbon Day is a campaign led by men and appealing directly to men, to take a stand against violence against women and girls.
Northumbria Police deals with on average 81 domestic abuse incidents on a typical day. It also manages the safeguarding of 715 high risk domestic abuse victims on a daily basis.
Men throughout Northumbria are being encouraged to show their support, by signing the international pledge – never to commit, condone or remain silent about men’s violence against women.
Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Vera Baird, said “White Ribbon day absolutely has my full support. Wearing a white ribbon shows that men are saying loud and clear that they will never condone any form of abuse against women.
“Quite simply domestic abuse is unacceptable and as part of the regional Violence and Women and Girls Strategy, myself and Northumbria Police will continue to do everything within our powers to put an end to it. But, we can only do this if we all work together – this includes, men, women, businesses and charities. Everyone needs to take responsibility.
“Everyone should be able to approach the police confident that those in authority will take the issue seriously and put the needs of the victim first. This is a priority for me and that’s why next week Northumbria Police will be launching its own campaign appealing to all members of the public to help us put a stop all forms of abuse from physical to emotional. It all must be stopped.”
Chief Constable, Steve Ashman, said: “While most men are not violent towards women, there are people who ignore the problem – they see something but think it doesn’t have anything to do with them so walk on by or don’t speak out.
“It’s these men that this campaign appeals to – if you know something happens behind closed doors or see something which concerns you, please don’t sit back and let it happen – get in touch – let us know so we can take appropriate action.”
