Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird has assured burglary victims that reducing the crime will remain a priority.
The Commissioner has also vowed to ensure officers continue proactive operations targeting burglars and giving out important crime prevention advice so that people can avoid becoming a victim.
Mrs Baird said officers would be concentrating efforts on tackling the issue as traditionally it rises across Northumbria as the warmer weather approaches with thieves using opportunities such as open windows and doors to gain access to homes.
Commissioner Baird said: “Let’s be absolutely clear – I am determined that Northumbria Police continue to do everything within their power to bring burglars before the courts.
“Being a victim of burglary can have an affect on a person’s life and it’s right that we do everything we can to reduce the number of incidents.
“Since 2013, Northumbria Police has been running Operation Soundwave targeting opportunist criminals and promoting crime prevention advice.
“It has proved successful with several arrests and charges in relation to burglary since it began. I will make sure officers continue with it so that those who are responsible for burglaries in our area are targeted, located and action taken against them.
“Operations like this clearly demonstrate police are taking a strong stance against criminals who commit this type of crime and residents can be reassured activity to make further arrests is always in the pipeline.
“I do acknowledge the police can’t do this alone and I’m committed to ensuring Community Safety Partnerships work with people in our neighbourhoods to reduce crime and re-offending and cut the number of victims of crime.
“Northumbria Police has an excellent record for bringing those responsible for burglary to justice and I’m determined to see this continue through Operation Soundwave and any other activity the force initiates.”
