Sexual Violence All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) inquiry into the links between pornography and sexual violence

14th March 2018

Overview:       The PCC provides views, evidence and recommendations on the link between pornography and sexual violence. The evidence was discussed at the APPG meeting on the 17th April 2018.

Summary:      The PCCs response to this consultation raised a number of issues:

  • Aggressive pornography and that depicting sexual violence contributes to a culture that normalises and promotes sexual violence against women. This is concerning not just from a policing perspective, but from a societal perspective.
  • Young people have rapid access to pornography and have been found to be using pornography as a guide on how to have sexual relations. Rape myth acceptance has also been found amongst young people who watch pornography.
  • The law is fragmented, piecemeal and still rooted in subjective notions such as ‘obscenity’ and ‘disgust’, which is inappropriate.
  • Education on sex and relationships for young people is needed to combat harmful depictions shown in pornography.
