Vera Baird praises cadets for help in the Queen’s birthday celebrations

10th June 2016

Northumbria’s Volunteer Police Cadets will be supporting Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations in Newcastle this weekend.

Celebrations will begin on Saturday June 11 with a concert in Newcastle City Hall on Saturday (June 11) with three of Northumbria’s cadets representing Northumbria Police and the cadet scheme.

And, on Sunday, June 12, cadets from across the force will take part in a parade on Gateshead Millennium Bridge along with other youth organisations including the Scouts, Guides and members of the emergency services.

Tutor Sergeant Paul Glendenning helps train and develop the Volunteer Police Cadets and has been involved in organising their involvement in the event.

He said: “I know our cadets will shine on the weekend as they represent Northumbria Police and the cadet scheme for Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations. It is a great honour for them to take part and we’re incredibly proud of them.”.

The celebrations come at the end of National Volunteers’ Week – a dedicated week to recognise the work of volunteers across the country. In Northumbria, last Saturday the force hosted the first ever Volunteers’ Conference to celebrate and recognise the work of volunteers for Northumbria Police and Northumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner.

The event was attended by some of the force’s older Volunteer Police Cadets while the younger cadets helped out at the event.

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Vera Baird, said: “Last weekend’s event was a great celebration of the crucial work our volunteers do and having the cadets represent Northumbria Police as part of Newcastle’s activity to mark the Queen’s birthday is the perfect close to a successful week of activity. I wish everyone involved an enjoyable weekend marking a very special occasion.”
